Favorable: granting every precision task a sixty-second on-ramp — pianists call it scales; you may call it “reviewing the dashboard.” Treating attempt #1 as a soundcheck, contractually. A warm-up email to a colleague who has agreed in writing not to grade it. Unfavorable: filing your first click of the morning under “evidence of decline.” Hunting a personal best on the first try and sulking by the second. Deep-cleaning a mouse that has not contained a ball since 2003.

Welcome back. Issue thirteen — a number that is only unlucky for first attempts — is about the ramp: why nobody, at any hour of the day, is any good on rep one.

The Science of Warming Up

Your first attempt at any motor task is reliably your worst, and it is not a character flaw; it is a cold engine. A brief warm-up primes the motor cortex — once a movement pattern has been rehearsed, the neurons that drive it fire more readily — and it tunes the loop between nerve and muscle, a miniature of what sports scientists call post-activation potentiation: a few contractions leave the system briefly faster and stronger than it was at rest.

You can watch it in ordinary office telemetry. Typing speed climbs over the first minutes of the day — not because you got smarter after the third paragraph, but because the circuit warmed up. Pianists do not play scales for the audience; they play them for their hands. Athletes rehearse the exact motion before the one that counts. And the office worker’s first email of the morning is their scales — clumsy, heavily backspaced, and quietly doing its job anyway.

For the record, this is not issue ten’s story. The circadian curve is about what hour you are; this ramp is about which rep you are on, and it shows up at every hour. Sit down at your late-afternoon peak and rep one is still the runt of the litter. So the practical conclusion costs one minute, twice over: never judge yourself by attempt #1, because it measures your warm-up state, not your skill — and give any precision task a sixty-second ramp before the part that counts.

This Week’s Pick: Speed Click

Speed Click is the bluntest instrument on this desktop: one big red button, one timer, and the number of times you hit the button before it stops. Your score is the raw click total; the CPS line divides it by the seconds so a sprint and a march can share one scale; and your best CPS is remembered — it greets you on the start screen like a standing dare. Five habits:

  1. Pick the mode for the question. Ten seconds measures burst — empty the tank, form be damned. Thirty measures pace — a rate you can actually hold. Sixty measures endurance — the last twenty seconds are a negotiation with your forearm. Same button, three different exams.
  2. Play a throwaway round. The first round is the first pancake. Run one light ten-second round to warm the circuit, then go visit your record. Judging yourself on the cold attempt is bad science and worse morale.
  3. Click from the finger, not the wrist. Rest the wrist, strike with the fingertip. Jitter-clicking (vibrating one finger) and butterfly-clicking (alternating two) are the enthusiast techniques, and both are perfectly legal — the game counts hits and does not grade form.
  4. Stay on the button. Only clicks that land on the button count, and hurry makes cursors drift. Park the cursor dead center and let the finger do all the traveling.
  5. Climb the rank ladder. At the buzzer your CPS earns a title: Leisurely under 4, Steady from 4, Skilled at 6, Gale at 8, Lightning at 10 and up. They are honest waypoints — one rung per week is respectable progress.

This week’s challenge: earn Skilled in the 30-second mode — 6 CPS, which is 180 clicks in one honest half-minute. Then trade how fast for exactly when: Tile Rhythm sends dark tiles down four lanes and grades your timing — every hit lands as Perfect or Good, a stray tap on a light tile breaks your combo, and only a dark tile slipping past unhit ends the run. Raw speed buys nothing over there without a metronome behind it.

Retro Corner: The Mouse With Moving Parts

The ball mouse was a mechanical watch you kept in your fist all day. Underneath sat a steel ball in a rubber coat, pressed against two rollers — one reading side-to-side, one reading up-and-down. Each roller spun a slotted wheel that chopped a beam of infrared light, and the chops became counts, and the counts became your cursor. Flip one over and half the heft was the ball itself: moving a pointer across a screen used to involve actual rotating parts.

Hence the ritual, observed identically on every continent. The cursor starts stuttering; you turn the mouse belly-up, twist off the retaining ring, and the ball drops into your palm. Around each roller: a gray fillet of compacted lint — desk dust and calendar time, pressed into felt. A fingernail or an unbent paperclip does the surgery, deeply satisfying and best not examined too closely. This is also why the mousepad was equipment, not decoration — the ball needed traction — and why a logo-printed pad was the reserve currency of every conference swag table.

Then, in 1999, the optical revolution arrived in earnest: an LED and a tiny camera photographing the desk more than a thousand times a second, motion computed straight from the pictures. No ball, no lint; no lint, no ritual. Every click you count this week rides on that history — the cursor now travels friction-free, but the button still has to be hit by hand, one honest rep at a time.
