About This Tool

Project schedules, contract deadlines and leave requests all run on working days, not calendar days. The obvious way to answer "how many working days is that?" is to flip through a calendar and count with a finger, and that is exactly where mistakes creep in: a public holiday in the middle of the range, a long weekend you forgot about, or a start date you counted twice. This calculator does the counting for you. Pick two dates and it splits the range into workdays, weekend or rest days and holiday days, then lists the holidays it found so you can check its work. The second mode runs the other way. Give it a start date and a number, and it tells you which date lands N working days later, which is handy for delivery dates, notice periods and review deadlines. The start date itself is day zero and is never counted. Mainland China adds a twist that a plain calendar cannot show: make-up workdays. To build a longer break, the government moves a working day around a holiday, so a Saturday or Sunday becomes a normal working day. This tool treats those days as workdays. A long holiday takes weekdays out of the count, and the make-up days put a few back on weekends, so subtracting the holidays from the weekdays by hand still gives the wrong total. The two checkboxes decide whether the first and last dates are part of the count, and they change the answer, so check what your agreement says. From Monday to Friday, counting both ends gives 5 working days, while leaving out the start date gives 4. Many contracts and company policies state which convention they use, so match it. If your office works Saturdays, choose a Mon–Sat week. For alternating weeks, where a six-day week is followed by a five-day week, set the anchor to any date that falls inside one of your six-day weeks, and the pattern continues from there. The holiday data covers 2025 to 2036, and a single range can be at most ten years long, so dates outside that span are refused instead of being counted wrongly. Your region, work week and checkbox choices stay in your browser, with no account and nothing uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I count the working days between two dates?
Pick the start and end dates and the result card gives the number of workdays directly. Behind the number, the tool goes day by day, sets aside weekends and public holidays for your region, and adds back any make-up workdays. It also shows calendar days, weekend or rest days and holiday days, so you can see how the total was reached, and the holidays that fell inside the range are listed below.
Are make-up workdays and substitute holidays included?
Yes. In mainland China a Saturday or Sunday that the government turns into a working day is counted as a workday, and the holiday blocks are skipped. In Japan a substitute holiday, which replaces a holiday that landed on a Sunday, is treated as a day off. If an official schedule has not been published yet, the date is calculated from the statutory rules, the holiday is tagged "Not yet announced" in the list, and a note warns that the count may change once the government publishes the year.
Should I tick 'Count the start date'?
It depends on how your contract or company counts. From Monday to Friday, counting both the first and last day gives 5 working days, while leaving out the start date gives 4. If a notice period starts the day after it is given, leave the start date out. If the day you begin working counts as day one, keep it in. When in doubt, follow the wording of the document you are working from.
Does it support a six-day week or alternating weeks?
Yes. The work week menu offers Mon–Fri, Mon–Sat, and alternating 6-day and 5-day weeks. For the alternating pattern, enter any date that falls inside one of your six-day weeks, and the tool continues the cycle from there. The same setting is shared with the other holiday tools on BytePlay, so you only choose it once.
